The spirit of Valentine’s Day hit the runway in NWSA’s Annual Fashion Show MIAMI---Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s are a few of the greatest American love stories ever told. Now, New World School of the Arts brings these classic romances and the theme of Valentine’s Day to the runway during its annual Fashion Show & Luncheon, a fundraising initiative to benefit the conservatory’s Dance Division. The signature benefit takes place on Sunday, February 14 at 11A.M. at the Miami Airport Hilton, 5101 Blue Lagoon Drive. Reserved seating is $75 per person (or a table for 10 can be purchased at the discounted price of $ 500). The fashion show has been held for seventeen years, and this year it offers a romantic twist as it falls on Valentine’s Day. From love stories, to courting dances, to red hearts, the spirit of love is captured through music, choreography, and fashion. This year’s theme offers a romantic treat for all audience who will undoubtedly be reminded of the many ways love is expressed. Valentine’s Day is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting bouquets of flowers, chocolates, jewels, love letters, and homemade Valentine hearts. Subsequently, these are the themes for each runway collection. Cupid will be present that day through the choreographic pieces to music by English Boy’s Choir as well as other angelic tones. And, whenever there is a great love, there is a great story. Snips of classic love stories such as Gone With The Wind to The Notebook give way to such truth. Directed and choreographed by former NWSA dance faculty Cynthia DuFault, Love Stories, A Runway Celebration of Valentine’s Day, highlights fun loving fashion in the spirit and mood that love is what we all desire. Our soul wants to express love and be loved. When we feel that powerful emotion we are our happiest. Underwritten in part by NWSA Foundation Board members Myrna Palley and Beatrice Simon, the annual fashion show and luncheon will help the dance division raise funds for costumes, point shoes, choreography, and guest teachers as well as for other needs that are above and beyond budgeted school funds.
Under the direction of NWSA Dean Daniel Lewis, numerous dance students have been recognized on a national scale, many of them joining renowned dance troupes that include the Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham and the Parsons Dance Companies. Among the most recent honors, two students received the distinguished NFAA (National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts) Award and one nomination to the Presidential Scholar of the Arts Awards. NWSA’s audition-based programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art, Dance, Music and Theater offers the high school diploma as well as a four-year BFA or degree. Areas of concentration in Dance include: Ballet, Choreography and Modern Dance. New World School of the Arts was created by the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts, and it is an educational partnership of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami-Dade College and the University of Florida.
