World renowned art collectors Don & Mera Rubell engage the South Florida arts community though Make Art Work [MAW]
MIAMI--- Renowned Miami art collectors Don and Mera Rubell mark the end of the season for New World School of the Arts’ Make Art Work (MAW) lecture series. With an interactive dialogue and Q&A session for students, faculty, media, and community arts enthusiasts, Through Collector’s Eyes: Don & Mera Rubell discuss contemporary Art and their process, takes place on Wednesday, April 7 in the NWSA ARTSEEN Gallery, 2215 NW 22nd Avenue, Wynwood Art District, at 6:30 PM. Admission is free.
Don and Mera Rubell began collecting contemporary art in the late 1960's, and their collection has grown into one of the most significant collections of contemporary art in the world, with over 5,000 works of art by some of the most prominent artists of the last few decades. Artists include Cindy Sherman, Keith Haring, Paul McCarthy, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami, Charles Ray, Damien Hirst, Chris Ofili, many of whom the Rubells have been collecting for years, often since their very firsts hows. The artwork is displayed in a series of yearly, thematic exhibitions at the Rubell Family Collection (RFC), a 45,000 former Drug Enforcement Agency confiscated-goods facility in the Wynwood section of Miami that has been converted into museum-quality exhibition space. RFC first opened to the public in 1994, and in 1998 the non-profit Contemporary Arts Foundation (CAF) was created to expand the Collection's public mission inside the paradigm of a contemporary art museum. Since opening in 1994, RFC has been recognized as the pioneer of what is often referred to as the "Miami model," whereby private collectors create a new, independent form of public institution.
Make Art Work is designed to bring professionals in the art world together with students and the community for a dialogue on the business of art. The series focusES on providing tools, guidance and strategies for success to the next generation of artists and will expand understanding of what it takes to live as an artist in the twenty-first century. A question and answer session following each talk allows students and the public opportunities for direct communication with leaders in the art world.
