NWSA college dancers explore poignant topics and
human emotions with introspective BFA Dance Concert

Miami--- As one of the most anticipated performances of the college year, the College BFA Dance Concert marks the most comprehensive and final project delivered by NWSA’s dance aspiring graduates. Daniel Lewis, Dean of the Dance division and instructor of this intense course announced last week, that the BFA concert-showcase which this year will feature a total of sixteen students, will be presented at 7:30 PM on Friday and Saturday, February 12 and 13 at  New World Dance Theater, 25 NE 2nd Street, downtown, Miami. General admission is $5.

“This is a very strong class influenced by today’s societal turmoil. Accordingly, these students have set out to explore and share with the audience their deepest emotions, through their movements and choreographies.  After four years at NWSA, they have developed a very meaningful bond for each other and their peer admiration and support is evident throughout the program,” stated Lewis. “They are ready to embark in a professional dance career and we’re confident many of them will soon be recruited by some of the top dance companies in the nation to joint their fellow alums. Today, our alums make up a notable percentage of the dancers in world-renowned dance companies such as the Martha Graham Dance Company, Alvin Ailey, Parsons and BattleWorks.”

The hour and forty-minute concert, comprised of sixteen pieces choreographed and performed by the students, is geared towards creating a mood reflective of today’s world issues and how humanity copes with them on an emotional level. From the uplifting to the dramatic, to the somber and introspective, the well rounded repertoire includes modern, abstract and pedestrian movements, incorporating props, found objects and the elements to convey their message.

Tamara Grant, one of the dancers explains about her choreography, I sin because I couldn’t see my own virtue, “My piece is about trying to find my own voice by exploring the struggles between good and evil and depicting them through various dance forms, including African and modern, set to a vibrant Jazz track.”  Life choreographed by Bienela Herrera, aims to discover emotions that “come from the center core and explode into the outer space.” Inspired by her son, this young choreographer delves into her emotions during a time when she questioned her ability to continue dancing while embracing her newfound maternal state.
