NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS VISUAL ARTISTS TO TRANFORM MIAMI-DADE METRO RAIL STATIONS WITH LARGE-SCALE MURALS AND CUTTING-EDGE DIGITAL ARTWORK. STARTING SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18 AT THE DOWNTOWN MIAMI BRICKELL STATION @ 10:00 AM

MIAMI---In collaboration between New World School of the Arts and Miami-Dade Transit Authority, more than twenty-five a student paints upon concrete pillars in Brickell Station of the Miami Dade Transit Authority students from the high school and college visual arts programs at NWSA will take on the challenging task of giving Metro Dade stations a visually cutting-edge makeover. The project, which starts at the Metro station on Brickell on Sunday November 18, will transform the station into an unexpected path of art and color. The design concept, said Maggy Cuesta, Dean of visual arts at NWSA “is to make the viewer experience an artistic movement that comes right out of the concrete columns and structures, which are the natural settings in the stations. The project, headed by professor Aramis O’Reilly, gives our students the opportunity to explore their art in an architectural canvas which will challenge their artistic perspective due to the set boundaries, all with the objective of creating an appealing environment for the passengers”.

“This collaboration would not have been possible without the vision of Jeff Bechdel, New Business Specialist at Miami-Dade Transit. Jeff approached us with this wonderful opportunity which we agreed could a win-win, not only for our students and the transit system, but also for our community.” Concluded Cuesta. Phase two of the collaboration will consist of transforming the benches at various Metro stations with juried student work. The reproductions of the work consist of paintings, drawings, digital media and graphic design and it is slated to begin for the Art Basel Miami Beach celebrations. These artworks will be enlarged and duplicated with the goal of extending the installations throughout the city.

One of the busiest metro stations – Government Center – will exhibit a collection of large-format prints with the theme of “Sillas” (chairs). Developed by visual artist Mauricio Gonzalez, a sophomore student in the college program, this unique series of drawings / paintings depicts the chair as an icon for human personification. To the viewer, this series will remove the chair from its static environment and will transform it into a work of art.

New World School of the Arts was created by the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts, is an educational partnership of Miami Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida.
