NWSA Receives $15,000 gift from the Orange Bowl committee

by the Orange Bowl Committee and Ocean Bank
To fund scholarships for
First-generation college students
 
Miami--- El Espiritu de la Comunidad Awards & Scholarship Benefit, organized by the Orange Bowl Committee and Ocean Bank, brought exciting WTVJ-NBC 6 anchor Jackie Nespral; NWSA Executive Board Co-Chair Monty Trainer; NWSA Provost Dr. Mercedes Quiroga; Sandra Gonzalez-Levy, Orange Bowl Committee member and VP of University and Community Relations for FIU; S. Danny Ponce, President Orange Bowl Committee and NWSA Executive Board member; Soila Gallegos, Previous First Generations Scholarship Recipient. news to NWSA as a generous contribution of $15,000 was presented to Provost Mercedes Quiroga during the evening reception held at Jungle Island earlier this month. The gift, part of the proceeds of the evening, stands to be matched by the State of Florida making the total donation $30,000.
 
"We are delighted to receive this generous bequest, particularly at a time when our scholarship and operating budgets are being challenged. These additional dollars will be earmarked to provide additional scholarships for our first-generation college students in all arts divisions" stated Quiroga. "The Orange Bowl Committee has been a strong supporter of New World School of the Arts for a many years. This thoughtful act further solidifies their commitment with the South Florida arts and education community and with our students and parents."
 
Florida International University was also presented with a $15,000 check designated for the First Generation Scholarship program at FIU.

Other El Espiritu de la Comunidad Awards & Scholarship Benefit honorees include retired Barry University President Sister Jeanne O'Laughlin, Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, Miami-Dade Community College President Eduardo J. Padrón, and Kiwanis Club of Little Havana President Eugenio Hernandez, among others.
