New World School of the Arts (NWSA) has been selected to receive the 2018 Alvah H. Chapman, Jr. Award of Excellence, presented today by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce during a lunch reception at Jungle Island. Now in its fourth year, this prestigious recognition honors Outstanding Achievements of an individual, an organization and young leader who have made significant contributions and set standards for the development of Miami's central business core's economy, culture, promotion, education, beautification and preservation. New World School of the Arts will receive the award at a Trustee Luncheon at Jungle Island, Wednesday, December 5, 2018.
“30 years ago, our founders opened the doors of access to rigorous arts education for talented college and high school students right here in the middle of downtown Miami and since then New World School of the Arts has changed the face of Miami and the nation, launching the lives and careers of some of the most important artistic leaders of today,” said Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, Provost and CEO of NWSA. “The recognition and support the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce has shown us with this award strengthens our resolve to continue to build the next generation of leaders in the arts. The faculty, staff and students of NWSA past and present deserve this recognition and I’m proud to represent and support their efforts.”
Taking the main stage by surprise, the more than 300 guests present at the awards luncheon were given a glimpse of the artistic training that is offered each day at New World School of the Arts when a group of 31 NWSA college music theater students presented an inspiring medley from timeless award-winning musicals including the ever-popular Newsies, Mary Poppins, and Jekyll and Hyde.About NWSA:
Founded in 1987, New World School of the Arts (NWSA) is a center of artistic and academic excellence in the visual and performing arts, dedicated to training High School and College students interested in careers in dance, music, theater and visual arts. Through its educational partnerships with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and University of Florida, NWSA confers the high school diploma, Associate of Arts degree, and Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees, in programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance, Music, Theater and Art & Design.
Blind to academic standing at the onset, New World School of the Arts’ acceptance policy is based solely on artistic talent - allowing students from all backgrounds, ethnicities and socioeconomic status to compete for their spot in the school’s coveted arts programs based on their individual talent. Earning respected national merit and leadership-based scholarships such as the Gates Scholarship, Posse Foundation, and Presidential Scholar in the Arts, NWSA students have demonstrated over the years that a rigorous arts curriculum not only helps foster their passion and create the next generation or artists, but it also helps students engage and achieve excellence in any academic discipline.
Through its gifted, emerging artists and unique programs, New World School of the Arts has become an educational and creative beacon of the arts, cultivating a generation of artists who have significantly marked the local and global artistic landscape. Trained by professional artists in their respective arts fields, our alumni are a source of inspiration to young artists from all walks of life in our community and in our state, and their success is a testament to the possibilities that emerge when the right blend of support and resources are engaged.
Today NWSA’s accomplishments contribute greatly to the growing reputation of South Florida as a vibrant center of artistic and cultural activity. Our alumni grace the stages, galleries and museums of our community, while also sharing their artistic talent across the nation and around the globe. They are award-winning playwrights, performers, musicians, dancers and visual artists with a noteworthy track record of recognitions including Academy, Emmy, Tony, Grammy, Bessie Awards, as well as Whitney Biennial exhibitors.
