New World School of the Arts is set to host a virtual commencement ceremony to celebrate the NWSA College graduating Class of 2020, amid the Coronavirus school closings. NWSA has created an online event that will be available via the internet and will be broadcast live via YouTube giving students, parents, friends and family the opportunity to engage during the live chat in celebration of the graduates.

“This year's commencement ceremony will be like none other in the history of this institution and unlike anything our graduates have seen. Our students have persevered through years of education and rigorous artistic training and for many this represents the culmination of their hard work at this stage in their lives. We’re not only excited to share this momentous occasion with them, their parents, mentors, family, and friends, but also, we’re thrilled to celebrate the unwavering resolve they have dedicated to their craft while at New World School of the Arts. It’s their time to shine and it’s our honor and privilege to offer them a celebration they will forever hold dear to their heart as they embark, full of hope in a world that has become vastly different than from when they began their journey at NWSA,” said Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, Provost and CEO of New World School of the Arts.

The New World School of the Arts college commencement ceremony will premiere on Tuesday, May 26 at 2 PM on the New World School of the Arts YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChDOMrN5mkqlJ2eU-lfYcKQ

The link can also be found at https://nwsa.mdc.edu/ and NWSA’s social media channels.
The video ceremony is expected to run approximately 40 minutes and will feature some of the standard traditional commencement elements highlighting the graduates, 2020 valedictorian address and conferring of degrees, among others.

However, it will also reflect the artistic personality of the renowned arts school located in the heart of Miami Florida, by incorporating exciting and dynamic footage of this year’s BFA and BM students doing what they love to do – performing, drawing, dancing and all types of artistic expression.

Other surprises include a special message to the graduating class of 2020 by power duo, NWSA theater alumni Edson Jean and Joshua Jean-Baptiste, winners of Project Greenlight’s digital series contest https://www.miaminewtimes.com/arts/grown-miami-webseries-debuts-on-complex-10370424

As is customary in every NWSA college commencement ceremony, the school’s educational partner institutions will also have the opportunity to offer remarks and well wishes to the graduates, alongside the New World School of the Arts Provost, Deans and faculty members.

For those unable to watch the live ceremony on May 26 at 2 PM, the event will be available to watch on NWSA's YouTube channel after the premiere. Spring 2020 graduates will be invited back to NWSA for an in-person reception hosted by each of the four arts divisions in a date to be announced later this year.

ABOUT NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS
Created by the Florida Legislature in 1987 as a Florida center of excellence in the visual and performing arts, New World School of the Arts is an educational partnership of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida. NWSA provides a comprehensive program of artistic, creative, and academic development through a curriculum that reflects our community and the rich multicultural state of Florida. Through our partners NWSA confers the high school diploma, Associate of Arts degree, and Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees in programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance, Music, Theater and Art & Design. New World School of the Arts' rigorous eight-year curriculum and conservatory-style teaching has empowered students in our community and our nation to become leaders in the arts for more than 30 years.

Providing access is one of New World School of the Arts most important missions. Blind to academic standing at the onset, NWSA’s acceptance policy is based solely on artistic talent. This allows students from all backgrounds, ethnicities and socioeconomic status to compete for their spot in the school’s coveted arts programs based on their individual talent. Once accepted, students are expected to achieve both academically and artistically. Earning respected national merit and leadership-based scholarships such as the Gates Scholarship, Posse Foundation Scholars, and Presidential Scholars in the Arts, NWSA students have demonstrated over the years that a rigorous arts curriculum not only helps foster their passion and create the next generation or artists, but it also helps students engage and achieve excellence in any academic discipline.

New World School of the Arts has educated, trained, and cultivated a generation of artists who have become the artistic leaders of the future. Graduates from the high school and college programs of NWSA are award-winning artists, playwrights and performers with Academy, Emmy, Tony, Grammy and Bessie Awards. They are influential painters, sculptors and graphic designers, and their work thrives in museums and galleries, as well as on stages and concert halls around the globe. Our alumni are a source of inspiration to young artists from all walks of life in our community and in our state, and their success is a testament of the possibilities that emerge when the right blend of support and resources are engaged.
