A celebration of style and fashion a la "Savoy Style" helps raise funds for New World School of the Arts’ Dance Division.

MIAMI---Following a fifteen-year tradition, New World School of the Arts presents its annual Fashion Show and luncheon NWSA Fashion Show poster appropriately titled Savoy Style. Organized by the Dance Division and the high school student parents, this invigorating event showcases the talent and poise of 97 dance students at NWSA’s high school program. With eleven high-energy dance numbers and fashion display, the signature benefit brunch takes place on Sunday, February 17, at 11 A.M. at the Miami Airport Hilton, 5101 Blue Lagoon Drive.

From casual attire to elegant evening gown apparel, the two-hour affair highlights the latest fashion trends and offers guests the opportunity to win specialty items and gift certificates from area vendors and supporters, sure to satisfy everyone’s tastes.

Honoring NWSA former Principal Ellery Brown for her leadership and two decades of dedicated service to the famed school, the 2008 Annual Fashion Show and luncheon is once again made possible through the generosity and unfaltering support of Myrna Palley and Beatrice Simon, both members of the NWSA Foundation Board.

Directed and choreographed by former NWSA dance faculty Cynthia DuFault, Savoy Style is inspired by the Savoy Ballroom in New York which would become the king of Swing. The Lindy hop or "lindy" flourished there, a partner dance that originated in the 1920's and 30's in Harlem, New York. Among the dance numbers to be performed at the Fashion Show this year are Stompin’ with usic by Benny Goodman, Louis Prima, & Gene Krupa, Begin The Beguine with music by Benny Goodman (Cole Porter), Lindy Hopper’s Delight with music by Lindy Hopper’s Delight and Riffin’ with music by Gene Krupa.

Under the direction of NWSA Dean Daniel Lewis, numerous dance students have been recognized on a national scale, many of them joining renowned dance troupes that include the Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham and the Parsons Dance Companies.  Among the most recent honors, two students received the distinguished NFAA (National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts) Award and one nomination to the Presidential Scholar of the Arts Awards.

Funds raised through the annual Fashion Show are used for costumes, point shoes, choreography, and guest teachers as well as for other needs that are above and beyond budgeted school funds.
