NWSA appoints Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson as new Interim Provost

MIAMI---Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, former Dean of Music of New World School of the Arts, has been chosen to lead NWSA as the new Interim Provost and CEO. As Interim  Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, DMA, Interim ProvostProvost and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Hodgson will be responsible for all fiscal and operational aspects of the school including administration and artistic leadership of the college and high school programs in dance, music, theater and visual arts.

Dr. Hodgson first joined NWSA as a piano professor in 1999 and quickly rose to the position of Dean of Music in 2002, a post he held until this summer. A native of South Dakota, Dr. Hodgson began teaching while still in high school. He is an active educator and performer in the State of Florida and has coached and collaborated with opera and musical theater singers from Minnesota Opera, Connecticut Opera and Goldcoast Opera and toured with Tenor Joseph Evans. Dr. Hodgson has adjudicated competitions for MTNA and Federation, served as the State competition coordinator for MTNA and served on the Board of Directors of Miami Music Teachers Association (MMTA). He was nominated for the prestigious South Florida Carbonell award for musical direction of The Dead at Gablestage. Dr. Hodgson has served on the accompanying faculty of the University of Miami Performing Arts Institute and Salzburg summer program. Dr. Hodgson studied piano with Luiz de Moura Castro, Boaz Sharon and Ivan Davis. He earned the Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree from the University of Miami, the Master of Music (MM) degree from University of Florida, the Bachelor of Music (BM) degree from Hartt School of Music and studied at St. Olaf College.

Jim Gasior, Jazz and Instrumental Studies - Associate Professor at the New World School of the Arts has been selected to lead the Music division as Dean. A well-known jazz and commercial pianist, keyboard and arranger Gasior has led the New World School of the Arts Jazz Ensemble to national success, winning the Jazz at Lincoln Center Essentially Ellington Competition. Mr. Gasior earned a Bachelor's degree in Studio Music and Jazz Performance and a Master's degree in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Miami and a Master's in Biblical & Theological Studies from the Knox Theological Seminary.

Former New World School of the Arts Provost Mercedes A. Quiroga Ph.D. has accepted the role of President for Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus. In that capacity, and through the educational partnership that is NWSA, Quiroga will continue to be involved in the operations of NWSA. Having played an integral role in the success enjoyed by NWSA in the past five years, Dr. Quiroga affirms, “I am proud to have been a contributor to the rich history that surrounds NWSA.  This school is a truly magical place filled with inspired artists, dedicated professionals and creative students. It is a blueprint for success.”

New World School of the Arts was created by the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts, is an educational partnership of Miami Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida.
