Miami --- A student-curated exhibition entitled Entrances and Exits: Resonating Impressions of World’s Fairs will open on April 11, in downtown Miami, featuring items from the private collection of Mitchell Wolfson Jr. The final product of a yearlong Museum Studies program offered by Miami Dade College and New World School of the Arts, at the Mitchell Wolfson Jr. Study Centre, with support from the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Foundation, the exhibition includes a vast array of objects, ephemera and souvenirs from various World’s Fairs that portray the resonating experience of the masses of tourists that visited these international expositions.
Opening reception is on Thursday April 11, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, at the New World Gallery. 25 NE 2nd Street, downtown Miami. Opening of Entrances and Exits will offer a lively experience similar to being at a World’s Fair with live music and international food and drinks provided by The DRB, El Cartel, First Avenue Bistro and Pizzarium.
“I am thrilled to have these students and their contemporary perspectives utilizethis collection as a cultural laboratory to interpret, analyze and present these celebratory materials. Human behavior is best understood by what the species attempts to make and this exhibition is sure to be a testimony to understanding,” commented Mitchell Wolfson Jr.
World’s Fairs created an illusion of faraway lands and introduced innovative technological advancements that left the public in awe. Entrances and Exits: Resonating Impressions of World’s Fairs investigates the original objects that lured contemporary audiences to these fairs, along with those that they took away with them to commemorate these experiences.
The exhibition is curated by Miami DadeCollege and New World School of the Arts students: Katie Acosta, Amparo Baquerizas, Inez Barlatier, Anika Batista, Maggie Génova-Cordoví, Rebecca Flor, Chris Ingalls, Anthony Quintana, Danilo A. Mantilla, Jessica Martin, Luna Lopez, and Veronika Lugo.
Entrances and Exits: Resonating Impressions of World’s Fairs runs from April 11 to May 31 2013 at the New World Gallery, Tuesday - Friday, 12 noon to 5:00 pm. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
