Big Fish picture of actors. The New World School of the Arts college music theater students take to the stage this month with the Broadway musical Big Fish, under the direction of NWSA faculty member James Randolph, highlighting the artistic talent of the Juniors and Seniors in the BFA program. "This is a great opportunity for the theater BFA students to stay current with what's happening in theater and to discover this piece. It has beautiful contemporary music that reflects southern culture written by one of the better composers working today: Andrew Lippa," said Randolph.

Opening Night for Big Fish is on Friday, February 15; 7:30 PM at Louise O. Gerrits Theater. 25 NE 2nd Street, 8th Floor. Follow-up shows are on February 16, 22 and 23 at 7:30 PM and Sundays, February 17 and 24 at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors. Information at 305-237-3541. Tickets may be purchased online sat http://nwsa.mdc.edu.

Director Randolph goes on to explain in his director's notes, "in all instances it's a story about fathers and sons. There's an old saying 'Never let the truth get in the way of a good story', and that is what the central character of Big Fish Edward Bloom does. Plays are about four things - politics, economics, religion and family. This story hits all of those institutions and shows us the eternal in standing by family. It is said nothing matters so much as blood - and one of the main characters, Will Bloom, discovers that about his relationship with his father Edward."

Five years after Big Fish a Novel of Mythic Proportions, by Daniel Wallace, was published, it was turned into a film called Big Fish directed by Tim Burton and in 2013, Grammy and Tony nominee Andrew Lippa, along with John August, created this version for music theater. "The title reflects many things - sustenance of the heart, soul and body. It's a classy, detailed, heartfelt piece full of rich music and quality writing," highlighted Chris Jones in the Chicago Tribune in 2013.
