2017 Commencement

Graduation Requirements

New World School of the Arts College Commencement Ceremony will be held Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at 2pm at the Olympia Theater.

Students who have completed all program requirements by Spring 2017 must log into Gatorlink and complete an application to graduate.

The deadline is January 29, 2017.

  • Access “Student Self Service”
  • Select “My Record” from My Online Services column on left side of screen
  • Select “Certificate/ Degree Application”

If you are graduating Summer or Fall 2017 you do not need to apply now.

Enter the user name and password and complete the application.

In addition, Visual Arts students that have completed all five art history courses (two at MDC and three at UF) can go on line and add a minor in art history. This form must be printed, completed, and brought to the office of Student Services. Here is the link:

Any New World School of the Arts student with a 3.4 or above will automatically graduate with honors. Any student with a 3.75 or above can complete additional work and graduate with highest honors. See attached link for details. Make sure your dean approves your project before you begin working on it. The deadline for the honors project is April 15, 2017.

Your graduation file will be reviewed in the next few weeks. You will be notified of any discrepancies.


Cap & Gown/Tickets

Caps/Gowns and Tassels will be distributed by the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus Bookstore (Your name will be on a list of NWSA Graduates).

There is no cost for the cap, gown and tassels. They are yours to keep.

Distribution Dates: Monday, April 10 – Tues, April 25, 2017 – during bookstore hours

Monday – Thursday        8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Friday                                   8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Tickets are not required for guests to attend the commencement ceremony.


Honorary Regalia

Honorary regalia will be available for pick up on the day of commencement.

All NWSA students with 3.4 GPA or above will be given complimentary golden honor cords upon arrival at check-in/robing on Tuesday, April 25th at 12:30pm.

Additionally, honors graduates can purchase orange and blue University of Florida honor cords in the NWSA Office, 5605 starting April 10th (while supplies last).

Magna Cum Laude
3.75 all divisions

Summa Cum Laude
Music and Visual Arts 3.90 GPA
Theater and Dance 3.75 GPA 


Day of Commencement Ceremony

Students should arrive to Bldg 5 at 12:30pm for check in and robing in room 5217. Honor students will receive complimentary golden honor cords at this time.

The traditional graduation street processional will begin at 1:45pm at NWSA, Bldg 5 and will end at the Olympia Theater.

Guests should go directly to the Olympia Theater. Ceremony begins at 2pm.


Special Needs and Individuals with Disabilities

In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, numerous upgrades have been made to the Olympia Theater in recent years to ensure that all patrons, including those with disabilities, enjoy their visit to the theater.

Entrance

The sidewalk at the corner of Flagler Street and NE 2nd Avenue is equipped with curb cuts. The theater’s Flagler Street entrance is wheelchair accessible and there is an automatic, power-assisted door. There are no steps or major inclines from the street into the orchestra level of the auditorium. There is no escalator or elevator to the mezzanine or balconies.

Seating

The orchestra level has 19 wheelchair positions located in rows A, T and U. Some seats are also equipped with removable armrests. All accessible seats may be reserved through Ticketmaster or at the Olympia box office. Please call the box office prior to the day of the performance to ensure that appropriate arrangements are made.

Listening Devices

The theater has assisted-listening devices available for patrons' use at no charge. Please speak to the House Manager upon your arrival to request a device.


Location/Directions

The Olympia Theater sits proudly at 174 E. Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33131.

From the North

Take I-95 South towards downtown Miami. Just north of downtown take Exit 2D, on the left, for I-395 toward Miami Beach. Take Exit 2B and merge onto NE 2nd Avenue. The theater is at the intersection of NE 2nd Avenue and Flagler Street.

From the South

Take South Dixie Highway/US-1 North. Continue on I-95 North. Take Exit 2-A toward Biscayne Boulevard/Downtown. Keep right at the fork and follow signs for SE 1st Avenue. Turn left at SE 1st Avenue, then right on Flagler Street. The theater is at the intersection of Flagler Street and NE 2nd Avenue.

Metrorail/Metromover

Take Metrorail to the Government Center Station. From there take the Metro mover to the NE 1st Street Station. The theater is located 1½ blocks south of the station.


Parking

The Olympia Theater is located in the heart of Downtown Miami with nearby access to on-street parking (Master Meter/PaybyPhone) as well as many public and privately owned off-street parking garages.

On-Street Parking:

Photography

A professional photographer will photograph the entire commencement ceremony and banquet. Students will receive a flash drive of all photos from both events by mail following the event.


Graduation Banquet

Graduates are given 3 complimentary tickets. Tickets can be picked up at the front desk of the Administration Offices in 5605 from 8am-4:30pm, April 10-21st. Additional tickets can be purchased for $50 per ticket from April 10th-21st.


Diploma

If you are a Spring 2017 graduate, the University of Florida will mail your diploma in approximately six (6) weeks.

Please access your account by logging onto ONE.UF.EDU to verify that your mailing address is correct, and that you have completed a financial aid exit interview, if applicable. Your diploma will be mailed to the current address in the UF system.

A transcript will be available upon request after the graduation date is posted.
