Dance Audition

The entrance audition for the Dance Division of the New World School of the Arts has two components:

  • Applicants will participate in a class which will include a modern dance warm up and across the floor work, ballet adagio and allegro combinations, and a jazz dance combination. The purpose of the audition class is to demonstrate the applicant’s technical ability in a variety of dance styles and his/her ability to take direction.
  • In addition, each applicant will be asked to perform a short solo dance, not to exceed one minute, in either ballet (pointe work is not permitted), modern, jazz, hip-hop or contemporary dance style. Acrobatics are prohibited for the safety of the dancers. The solo may be from the classic or contemporary repertoire or be an original work choreographed by the student or a teacher. The purpose of this solo dance is to demonstrate the applicant’s performing skill. Each candidate is encouraged to bring musical accompaniment in two formats (phone, tablet, laptop). Music should be downloaded as a music file, not streamed. Please bring an adaptor if needed.

Applicants are requested to wear appropriate dance attire for the audition.

  • Women wear a dark, solid-colored leotard, black or pink tights (that can be rolled up for modern dance) ballet shoes and jazz shoes.
  • Men wear black tights that can be rolled up, solid-colored t-shirt, ballet shoes and jazz shoes.

*Please do not wear bulky clothes, or jewelry and have long hair pulled away from your face and neck and secured to your head.
