This year’s New World School of the Arts’ High School Spring Dance Concert will be an exciting and varied program, featuring the work of respected choreographers including Kehynde Hill, Josée Garant and Peter London, among others.
The High School Spring Dance Concert starts at 7:30 PM on May 8. Other performances are on May 9, 14, 15 and 16 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, May 9 at 2:00 PM. The 2015 NWSA High School Spring Concert will present a varied program of works in different dance genres and will include a new contemporary ballet work by NWSA faculty member, Lara Murphy, entitled East of the Sun, West of the Moon; a driving contemporary work by guest artist Uri Sands, formerly a dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater company and now Artistic Director of the Minneapolis-based TU Dance company, entitled Earth; a new work by modern choreographer Rebecca Cannan featuring live music composed by Sean Dibble and performed live by his ensemble. This exciting work is entitled Les Forces Opposées; and a new work by hip-hop choreographer Kehynde Hill entitled SOME GOOD OLD NEW! The program also presents a new work created by the New York City-based contemporary choreographer Francesca Harper, entitled The Quality of this Moment; and a ballet work by faculty member Gerard Ebitz, former dancer with the Miami City Ballet, entitled Sunshine State.
Later in the month the NWSA high school seniors put their choreographic and performing talentsonstage, in the High School Senior Showcase, presenting an evening of choreographic premieres interspersed with video footage of their years at NWSA. Among the dances to be presented are Janet Cesarotti's intriguing new contemporary work, Malmö; Marcel Mejia's powerful duet, Tiburón, danced with Madeline Prieto; and Michelle Anduiza's moving finale for the ensemble entitled: 20+C+M+B+15. Stylistically varied and youthfully energetic, this is an evening that is a lively and engaging program of new works.
The High School Senior Showcase is a one-day presentation on May 21 at 2:00 PM and again on 7:30 PM. New World Dance Theater, 25 NE 2nd Street, 8th floor, downtown, Miami.
