Student Handbook

The NWSA Student Handbook clarifies values, standards, and departmental and academic terms and expectations for which the school holds all students accountable; and provides resources and support services for students to help establish strong foundations for their college career. It is the expectation of New World School of the Arts that all students are responsible for reading and understanding the information within the Student Handbook, in addition to your rights and responsibilities as students at Miami Dade College and the University of Florida.

Emergency Preparedness - Hurricanes/Inclement Weather/Active Shooter

The weather conditions in South Florida can quickly change with little or no notice. Severe thunderstorms have the potential to produce a number of hazards that can pose a threat to life and property. Be prepared for flooding, lightning, and/or tornados, which may occur during any severe weather event. Students can access information about Emergency Preparedness at Miami Dade College.

LiveSafe

LiveSafe enables direct and discreet two-way communication with your community safety officials using text, picture, video, and audio. It also lets you virtually walk your friends and family home with SafeWalk. Download "LiveSafe" from Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Housing and Transportation

Off Campus Housing

The office of Student Affairs has put together a housing guide to give incoming students information regarding relocation to the Miami area, as we do not offer on campus housing options. The NWSA campus is located in downtown Miami. The "ambiance" in downtown is strictly urban. The rent and availability of space can change quickly. The following is a list of apartments that current or former NWSA students have rented. This list is not exhaustive, so students should plan to research housing not listed here as well.

Transportation

Metrorail

The Metrorail system is a 25-mile dual track, elevated rapid transit system in Miami Dade County that provides service to Miami International Airport (MIA) and runs from Kendall through Downtown to Northwest Miami with connections to Broward and Palm Beach counties at the Tri-Rail/Metrorail transfer station. Students at NWSA can visit https://transitstore.miamidade.gov/ to purchase passes. Single trip fare is $2.25.

Tri-Rail

The Tri-Rail system offers student fares at 50% of the regular fare with the EASY Card. Fares are flexible from $2.50 to $6.90.

Brightline
Brightline offers express train service connecting you to Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach with future service to Orlando. $10-$15 round trip. 95 Express Bus Broward Blvd to Downtown Miami (SE 1st St and 1st Ave) 2 blocks from NWSA. Last pick up going North is at 7pm. Sheridan Street to Downtown Miami (SE 1st and 1st Ave) 2 blocks from NWSA. Last pick up going North is at 6:45pm.

Metromover

Metromover is a free service that operates seven days a week in the downtown and Brickell area. Major destinations include the American Airlines Arena, Bayside Marketplace, Miami-Dade College Wolfson Campus and the Miami-Dade County School Board Free and travels the loop around downtown Miami and Brickell.

Welcome to Student Life at New World School of the Arts College!

The NWSA campus is located in downtown Miami on the Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College and is easily accessible by public transportation. Miami is easily one of the most exciting cities in the United States. Richly diverse, it is a city that will support and inspire your artistic exploration. We are minutes away from several cultural venues such as the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Perez Art Museum Miami, Frost Museum of Science, the Historical Museum, and the Olympia Theater. New World School of the Arts extends students a unique opportunity to enjoy the many cultural centers and exciting attractions that make Miami the "Magic City."

The Student Services Department strives to enhance the college experience for NWSA students through leadership opportunities, social and community events. There are opportunities for leadership through our Student Government Association and New Student Orientation Leader team. The Student Services department organizes New Student Orientation, UF Convocation, Commencement, and advises SGA.

Student Government Association

The New World School of the Arts Student Government Association exists to represent and communicate the interests of the Student Body. SGA advocates for student issues and improvements at the college. In addition, SGA works with the Student Services department to maintain and improve student life by planning and executing events and volunteer outings to promote interaction between students in all four divisions. SGA meets bi-monthly where all students are invited to discuss issues affecting the school.

SGA hosts special events and community service opportunities throughout the academic year; including signature events like Gobble Wobble, Day Trips, Beach Outings, Runs and Walks for Charity, Karaoke, and offers grants for student led division projects such as the BFA Dance recital, Opera shows, Theater studio shows. SGA also sponsors the NWSA store for students to purchase NWSA apparel.

Counseling Services

College is filled with excitement, learning, and new experiences. It is also a time where you will be challenged and may feel uncertain, lost, overwhelmed, or down. Actors, dancers, musicians and artists are vulnerable to a variety of challenges that are unique to those who choose to make their living using their creative talents and skills, and sometimes, college life is tough. Student Counseling Services focuses on the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of health as it relates to each student. We are here to help. Our licensed counselor is committed to providing and connecting you to a wide array of services and resources to address your concerns. This is a free and confidential service for NWSA students.

Student Health Insurance

Domestic and International students studying at the University of Florida can purchase health insurance.

International students can purchase health insurance through a vendor authorized Miami Dade College.

Graduation

2024 College Commencement

Commencement is a special time at New World School of the Arts. Earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or a Bachelor of Music (BM) takes discipline, hard work, networking and creativity. At NWSA we recognize the sacrifices our students have made to achieve their passion of pursuing a career in the arts and commencement is their time to celebrate their achievements. It is also our time to recognize and continue our unwavering support of their academic and artistic efforts.

Apply for Graduation

The deadline to apply for Spring 2024 Graduation is February 2, 2024.

Art History Minor

Visual Arts students that have completed all five art history courses (two at MDC and three at UF), must complete the Art History Minor application. This form must be printed, completed, and brought to the office of Student Services.To ensure that you are on track to graduate Spring 2024, degree audits will be reviewed during the advising and registration meeting with your division advisor in October 2024.

Honors

New World School of the Arts students with a 3.4 or above will graduate with honors. Students with a 3.75 or above can complete additional work and graduate with Highest Honors. Projects should be discussed with each division deans. Highest Honors projects should be submitted by April 8, 2024.

  • Cum Laude: All divisions 3.4 GPA
  • Magna Cum Laude: All divisions 3.75 GPA
  • Summa Cum Laude: Music and Visual Arts 3.90 GPA
    Theater and Dance 3.75 GPA

Apply to UF

Junior level students and students taking Upper Division level courses are required to apply to the University of Florida. Upper Division coursework is registered at UF.Your division advisor for more details on whether you should apply as a non-degree seeking student or for full admission.
